Marraskuussa kello 1.14 yön viimeinen raitiovaunu lipuu Härmälänrannan kääntösilmukkaan. Matkustamossa istuu Henrik Vane, Tampereen älykaupunkihankkeen pääarkkitehti ja monimiljonääri. Hän on kuollut, ja hänen huulensa on maalattu mustalla pigmentillä irvokkaaksi hymyksi.

Kaupungin valvontakamerat ovat olleet sokeina tasan kolme minuuttia. Kun kuva palaa, ruudulla odottaa viesti KRP:n rikosylikonstaapeli Henna Yli-Säntille. Vanen rintataskusta löytyy punainen kulkukortti vanhaan teollisuussairaalaan, jossa Hennan veli Lauri kuoli kymmenen vuotta sitten.

Keskustorin suurella näytöllä käynnistyy laskuri. Tekijä tuntee kaupungin älyliikenteen paremmin kuin sen rakentajat ja ohjaa vaihteita, opastimia ja jarruja mielensä mukaan. Mitä pidemmälle Henna pääsee, sitä selvemmäksi käy, ettei hän voi luottaa edes omiin kollegoihinsa.

Otso Viima

Otso Viima on tamperelaisen tietoturva-ammattilaisen salanimi. Hän vietti viisitoista vuotta suojaamassa järjestelmiä, joiden varassa suomalaiset kaupungit liikkuvat, ja tietää siksi tarkalleen, mitä tapahtuu, kun joku kääntää ne ihmisiä vastaan.

Viima kasvoi Pispalanharjun pohjoisrinteellä, ja hänen isoisänsä teki työuransa Tampellan konepajalla. Sokeat Kiskot on hänen esikoisromaaninsa ja Tampere-trilogian ensimmäinen osa. Hän ei esiinny julkisuudessa eikä anna kasvokuvia.

Hän kulkee ratikalla joka päivä ja istuu aina vaunun perälle, selkä seinää vasten.

The story

The last tram of the night

At 1:14 on a November night, the last tram glides into the turning loop at Härmälänranta. In the passenger car sits Henrik Vane, chief architect of Tampere's smart city project and a multimillionaire. He is dead, and his lips have been painted with black pigment into a grotesque smile.

The city's surveillance cameras have been blind for exactly three minutes. When the picture returns, a message is waiting for Detective Sergeant Henna Yli-Säntti of the National Bureau of Investigation. In Vane's breast pocket is a red access card to the old industrial hospital where Henna's brother Lauri died ten years ago.

A countdown starts on the big screen in Keskustori, the central square. The killer knows the city's smart transit better than the people who built it and moves its switches, signals and brakes at will. The further Henna gets, the clearer it becomes that she cannot trust even her own colleagues.

Author

Otso Viima

Otso Viima is the pen name of a Finnish information security professional who spent fifteen years protecting the systems that move Finland's cities, and therefore knows exactly what happens when someone turns them against the people who ride them.

Viima grew up on the northern slope of the Pispalanharju ridge in Tampere, and his grandfather spent his working life at the Tampella engineering works. Blind Rails is his first novel and the first book of the Tampere Trilogy. He does not appear in public and does not release photographs of himself.

He rides the tram every day and always sits at the back of the car, his back to the wall.
